I love finding local spots that make me feel as if I am in distant locales, whether flower fields, historic mansions, or seaside cliffs. Aquitaine Boston, located on the South End’s “restaurant row,” is one such gem. With its sublime croque monsieur sandwiches, gorgeous afternoon light, and chic brasserie interiors, it transports you to the streets of Paris.

Recently, ma cousine Claire and I enjoyed an exquisite lunch with Aquitaine Boston. The Salade Nicoise was a gorgeous display of color and texture, mixing roasted vegetables, tender tuna, and soft-boiled eggs. The beet platter was a work of art. The Confit Chicken was cooked to perfection, placed upon a bed of bright, spring salad.

The pièce de résistance was the croque monsieur sandwich. Ooey gooey cheese concealed a creamy layer underneath, a touch of mustard, and intensely flavorful ham. It may have been better even than the croque monsieurs I devoured in Paris.

To go along with our meal, we enjoyed The Saint C cocktails, made with a mix of grapefruit, lemon bitters, and gin, topped with rosemary sprigs.

They were as tasty as they were pretty.

Finally, for dessert we polished off a creamy crème brûlée topped with tiny madeleines, as well as the most decadent of chocolate mousses. We were given piping hot french fries to dip in our mousse. Because we’re on a diet, after all.

Finally, we made our way home walking through the stunning South End streets, très full and très happy.
